Barry Nierenberg Lifetime Education Award
This award is conferred upon an individual who devotes a large and significant portion of their effort to education regarding rehabilitation psychology and the foundational principles, and can include those who teach undergraduates/graduates, run and/or are a part of a rehabilitation psychology training program, and take part in educating other health care professionals.
This award carries Dr. Nierenberg’s name in recognition of the outstanding contributions he has made over the years in teaching the foundational principles of Rehabilitation Psychology to psychology and medical trainees and professionals. Since 2013, Dr. Nierenberg has served on the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology, where he coordinates the Foundations from the Foundation Project, disseminating some of the most notable contributions to our field. During his Presidency of Division 22 (1998-1999), Dr. Nierenberg worked in close collaboration with Drs. Mitch Rosenthal and Bernie Brucker to launch the inaugural Rehabilitation Psychology Conference, first held in San Diego in 1999. Dr. Nierenberg went on to play an integral role in the conference planning team over the next 10 years, including serving as Chair 2008-2011. This Conference has become the premier Rehabilitation Psychology Conference in the country, and he continues to bring a significant group of his graduate students to the meeting each year. During his tenure as President of the Academy of RP, he helped to finalize the contract with Oxford University Press, which led to the publication of the Academy of Rehabilitation Psychology Series. During his time at Nova Southeastern University, he developed and implemented a Rehabilitation Psychology Course for doctoral students, which remains quite popular, and mentored NSU's Chapter of the Division 22 Student Leadership Network (SLN). This award carries Dr. Nierenberg's namesake to honor his achievements and personify the spirit and intent of the award.
